Whether the news that we have lost our job is expected or takes us by surprise, the bottom line is the same. When a job is lost, something vitally important to us is lost—and the natural human response is to grieve. Failing to recognize and respect the unique experience of grief following the loss of a job may leave us with a feeling of helplessness and pending chaos that threatens our ability to face reality and make responsible decisions. During this frightening time, however, we can look for work and grieve well at the same time.

It is reasonable to take a few days “off” to come to grips with the current situation, maybe even a week. Then, its time get motivated, get started and figure out what’s next. The best advice for completing a successful job search is “start right away.”

Despite the best efforts, life is not going to unfold per our plans. Take heart, when a job is lost, respect the fact that grief is essential to finding a new job. Working through the stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance of reality – is required, recognizing that work seldom unfolds in a logical manner. There is no standard formula, no time line, no point of arrival. In fact, we may still feel the grief of a job even after we’ve found another position. But the loss of a job is not the loss of our dreams. Taking the time to grieve ensures that we will have the energy, courage, and confidence to reshape our dreams and reach into the future.
